One of them finishing the Aston Martin DB4 Zagato for the HistorX mod.

Well, may be is not 100% finished, as some details have to be improved, but I can say that its currect status will be very similar to what you will find once this one is released, that's for sure :)

As I usually do, I've used this personal project to learn now things about modeling, etc. I wanted to have a lot of detachable parts on this car. But that put a big problem on my work table: if i want to have a detachable hood i should be able to put something below as having a hole where the nice Aston engine was expected to be found be wouldn't look that good...

I searched on the Net, but there weren't any proper pics to be used so... what's the solution? as always, if you can find it done just do it by your self!

So, using some pics as reference I created something to be put on that hole, as you see in these two pics.

Yes, materials look a bit rough, but more detail wasn't really necessary as I only needed that engine to get some credible renders so i could put a low poly version of it in the car (the engine itself got as many polygons as the full body of the car!).

So, i just created a box and mapped the renders of the engine on it, so in game you can see something similar but with less detail, of course.

Ok so now i had that hole filled so was time to move on, basically to finish both left and right hand drive versions of the car, as well as to prepare the spinner hi poly versions of them.

These two versions aren't just mirrors of the same model, but have different elements. The RHD version was developed to look more like a racing car, while the LHD was developed to look more like a street version.

So, and to stop my usual long writings here are two pics illustrating the current look of both LHD and RHD versions (including hi poly spinner models):

Hope you like it!

Cheers

Looking for some of my music?

In the case you want to listen/download some of my music take a look to the menu located on the right section of this page. Time passes fast as hell, that's for sure! The lack of activity here has been replaced by thousands of posts on different forums (and I mean that) and some writing in the cheesy Facebook (which lose interest for me each day, as in the end it's becoming just a tool to feed the gossip side of many people), no need to talk about some important changes regarding real life.

But apart of that I haven't been idle at all.

In the last months I've been improving my 3D modeling and painting skills a lot, which is my main creative activity right now. Being part of HistorX modding team is an exciting and addictive activity, not only by the artistic challenge of creating the virtual version of such wonderful classic cars but for the people I've met doing it. No need to say about how glad I'm seeying that even after so many months we still have new users being added to the thousands who consider this one of the best mods available.

In this moment I'm finishing the beautiful Aston Martin DB4 Zagato.

I started with the cockpit view, and first was the turn of the left hand drive version (LHD), which was modeled by Grasshopper, another HistorX's member. Then I improved it and created additional 3D elements (like the steering wheel, buttons, etc), as well as all the textures.

After that one It was the turn of the right hand drive version, which I'm trying to finish now, so stills being in "work in progress" status. As you can see it looks like a racing version, while the LHD looks closer to a street version.

During the past months I've finished other models also, like the Porsche 904 GTS and the Ferrari 250 GTO. And much more are on the way also, but that's something I'll left for future posts :)

Anyway, having 3D knowledge is handy indeed. Having bought a new flat now we're in the process of reforming it. And having the possibility of seeing how it would look in advance has a lot of advantages, as you may imagine.

And if you're wondering if I've been composing music lately, I have to admit that composition has been put on stand-by mode for some time. Despite I still like a lot to compose I'm now focused in other artistic activities, as you've seen, but that doesn't mean I'm not interested about music anymore. I still playing quite often, and still having fun doing it, so there's nothing to be worried at all really, as I may come back eventually.

Well, time to go back to real life. Anyway, here you have a little video showing part of the work I did with that user interface.

Come back soon to know more about these projects and more. This time in other expansion. I've very happy of this, as you can imagine.

During the last year I've been focused on the Historic GT & Touring cars for rFactor project, so I haven't composed a lot, but I really miss it, so probably I'll try to get some time to go back to it.

Anyway, thanks to the things I'm doing in the Historic GT project I'm receiving some offers from game developers to join them to work on some projects. As you imagine I'm glad to have such opportunity and I'm looking forward to it.

So, I don't know really if I'll get a spot to work seriously on music again in the next months.

Well, time will tell... A lot of new things came to my life, in form of new projects or interest.

If you came here to know more about my music I have some news:

"Strategic Command 2: Weapons & warfare expansion" for SC2 was released in the last days of November. In that turn based strategic WWII game you'll find some of my WWII songs. If you like that game genre probably you'll love this game ;)

For those of you than don't believe that, take a look to this pic :)

Apart of that, a couple of weeks a go I received an offer to compose the full soundtrack of a new movie. I can't give you much more details of that for the moment, as I'm waiting for more info about the script, etc. and I haven't decide yet If I'll get involved in that project or not. Anyway, a great new, at least for me, hehe.

Following with this WWII games, don't forget to take a look to the release of Forgotten Hope 2.

This amazing Battlefield 2 WWII modification, which first version for the old Battlefield 1942 already included some of my songs, is going to be revolutionary, so If i were you I'll start downloading as soon as it's released tomorrow! :)

But I've been focused lately in other kind of things. Mainly in simracing. About that, I'm the coordinator of the 'Historic GT & Touring car' mod for rFactor

We're developing a huge mod for that racing simulator, focused on classic GT cars of 60s-70s. Realistic physics, gorgeous graphics and sounds and much more features (many of them still being kept in secret, hehe) make this mod one of the most desired in the rFactor community.

I invite you to learn a bit more about this simracing thing. It's a real cool hobby that let you experiment a lot of (virtual) speed and excitement safely, racing against other simracers spread around the world :)

Just an example: in our modding team there're people from all around the world, with ages from 15 years old to men in theirs 50's who own or have driven (even in races) some of these classic cars, working together in this thing. So it's really a good way to do new friends with similar interests ;)

Take a look about this video I made, where you can see my simracing hardware, as well as the main simracing titles I play.

About the new style of this site and my own 'corporative image' I've delayed it for a while, until I get a bit of free time to organize it.

I'll be back soon, with more info with my music, as well as other things. In the meanwhile take care, and don't forget to come back again ;)

Kindest regards

A new song on the way and other changes

Hi again,

despite I don't post too much that doesn't mean I'm idle :-)

I'm working in a new song these days. Is not really new, because I composed it many years a go (5-10, don't know), but I never recorded it. I like it very much and If someday I forget how to play it I'll kill myself, so to record this one is a must for me :)

It's a song for acoustic guitar, with the style of 'With you in your dreams/Contigo en tus sueños', the acoustic song released many months a go. The main guitar track is already recorded, and now I'm working in some strings arrangements and a second guitar.

When I release this song probably I'll back to the composition of orchestral songs. But the recording of this song is something I'm saying I'm going to do from many time a go, so It's the first in the list now :-)

Besides, I'm planning to change the design of this website, and even to release the music under a new name which sonds more professional.

The reasons to do that is quite simple: in the beggining I only released orchestral music with a war movie style, but lately I'm releasing music with other styles (and in the future I'm sure I won't be focused only on that kind of music). So It hasn't sense to keep the website full of that WWII stuff.

On the other hand, Rantam is only my nickname, but during the last months I'm receiving offers of companies which want my music or are asking me to compose for them, so I think it's a good idea to get a better, more professional, name. But I'll give you more details about that soon.

So, please stay tunned to get the new song and more news about the way my music is turning to.

Best regards

Some statistics about my music

Hi,

I've got some numbers about my music for you, provided by my music host (www.soundclick.com):

"Entering battle" is my most listened and downloaded song. It's #178 of 8241 songs in the rock chart (highest was 40).

My music section has got more than 15000 hits.

I suppose that is enough for the moment :-)

Besides, my music has been used in PC games, a NoFear DVD and is planned to be part of a WWII movie.

A boring post, I know, but sometimes our lives need numbers! :-)

Best regards

Merry Xmas and... a new song!

Hi!

first of all, Merry Xmas. Finally I finished 'Flying high', the rock song I was working on during the last weeks (may be you heared the sample I posted some weeks a go in my music section).

In the beggining this was planned to be a metal/industrial song (to be part of a extreme sports DVD), but during the composition/recording of the song it turned to a hard rock song with a clear 80s/90s guitarrist song style.

Some changes in the mixing are needed, but it's not an early version anymore. as always, you can listen/download it from here. It's the second one beggining from bottom of the page. Go there and press the 'Hi-Fi' link.

I hope you like it!

Be careful, and don't eat/drink too much during this holidays! :-)

Best regards

Rantam

Some surprises after a long time!

Hi!

some months have passed since my last post, so I think I have to pay you for the long waiting...

This summer I've been in Northern France, visiting Normandy and a lot of WWII places, and I have come back with a lot of books, souvenirs, pics, etc. which will help me to get into more WWII taste compositions.

(Don't worry, I suppose I'll post some pics/things here when I get some free time in order to share that experience with all of you) :-)

But I have to admit that I'm a bit dissapointed with FH, because they seem to not be very interested to have somebody doing music for them. Or I have to say: having me doing music for them ;-) It's being really hard, because they don't want 'war film music' in their mod. They seem to prefer some old WWII music.

This music it's fine (I really like it) but I thing most of it isn't very epic, etc. and I think it's very important to emphasize the meaning of all that effort done to get a free world. All the suffering and pain. And I think most of those songs don't have that feeling.

This differences has 'forced' me to forget a bit my own composing style and work in the creation of some cover of these old war songs, as I wrote in my previous post.

But every day I lose interest on that, because I think I should follow my own way due I'm not part of FH team indeed. And that's despite I've heard some 'If we like the next one you'll join' song after song...

So, I'm not angry with them (I still thinking they are doing a great job with the mod, and I still loving it), of course, but I have other interesting proyects on mind.

For example, the "No Fear extreme sports" guys who chose my WWII to be part of their amazing "The great outdoors: The constant war" have contacted me again asking for some rock/metal stuff. I have been playing electric guitar for almost fifteen years and I've played in a heavy metal band, as well as I've been guitar teacher, and it looked a good moment to put some effort to create some rock guitar tune after so many years.

As result of it, I'm working in 'Flying high'. Is not as metal as I'd want, and it's in a very early stage (only some guitar ideas), but I must admit it's being very funny to see how easy is to create a recording studio at home today and record some rock song.

So, I invite you to go to my music's section to hear this song, as well as some WWII demo songs I've been working in the last months.

Please, take in mind all of that stuff are demos and a lot of work stills being necessary to complete them.

Hope you enjoy all of them. And please, give me some feedback!

See you soon here!

Rantam

Oldies win... I'm working in four new WWII epic songs. This time I'm creating victory and defeat songs for German and Britain, to be included in the incoming Forgotten Hope 2 mod.

The lenght of these songs will be 15-30 secs, to fit the measure of EA's Battlefield 2 defeat and victory songs.

Britain defeat song is very close to be completed, and victory song is under hard development. German songs are only melodies in this moment, but they'll be upgraded as soon Britain songs are completed.

In the incoming weeks these songs will be available in this website. Apart of your OS you'll need other things:

1st. A sequencer. There're a lot of software sequencers available. May me the most used are Cubase, ProTools, Logic or Sonar. These are commercial software, and most of them are quite expensive, but you can find some free sequencers too.

There is a free version of ProTools (may be the most used proffesional sequencer), but there're other options like Emagic's Logic fun, a free version of Logic, it famous sequencer.

Anyway, most of the sequencers works in the same way and have similar functions: MIDI & Audio tracks, mixing table, plugin support, effects, etc. So surf the web to learn more about these products, check your pocket to see if you have enough money to buy your favourite sequencer or download some of the free ones.

2nd. Samples. If you don't own a keyboard with builtin sounds you'll need a sampler to store the sounds you'll use to create your music.

There are two sample types: loops or 'single note' samples. Loops are usually rhythm samples which can be used to create the rhythm base of a song. They can help you to build a song in few minutes, and they are good to inspire you, so they'll help you to find the melody or song you're looking for. The disadvantade is that they aren't very flexible, so you'll be limited when you use them to build a song.

In the other hand, 'single note' samples are very flexible, due they only contain a single note of a certain instrument.

Using some of these samples you can create a virtual instrument. This virtual instrument is built using one sample for each instrument's note. This allows you to play a sitar with your keyboard, for example. Anyway, you'll need to work a lot in this samples to get a credible real instrument sound.

Usually, the most credible instruments samples are percussions, due these instruments are single noted. But with brass or strings ones you'll need to spend some time until you get good results.

There're tons of samples/virtual instruments available, to be used by keyboards and hardware samplers, or in software samplers. You'll find free samples available on Internet or in digital music magazines, but the best samples are usually commercial products, so if you don't have a keyboard you'll need to spend some money.

I can't say 'The winner in the 'Samples contest is...', because It depends of the sound you're looking for. Sometimes you'll find the sound you want on the CD of a digital music magazine or in one of those expensive samples pack used by professionals.

If you have enough money you can check some of the products of Big fish audio, Eastwest or Vienna. Probably Vienna is the most used orchestral sample pack, but it's quite expensive for most of the people, so it's usually used only by professionals. A cheaper option could be the Big fish audio products.

Ok, here ends the first chapter. I hope you liked it.

See you in the second chapter: 'Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working'

MyWayToCreateMusic: Tools Part 1 - Hardware

Hi again!

May be you have enough money to rent Vienna's symphonic orchestra, but in most of cases you will not have more than the money necessary to buy a new computer or soundcard. Well, don't panic mate! you don't need more than these to get some aceptable results.

The only thing you need to begin working is yourself. I'll explain this later deeply, but for the moment I suppose you have this hardware: yourself. If you haven't, ask your girlfriend, boss or teacher to have more free time :-)

2nd: A computer. You won't need a high-end one, with 4 GB RAM or the latest processor, motherboard or soundcard. Any modern computer will do this job very well.

In my opinion, and being very simple, any computer with 2 years or less will do a great job, with 2 to 4 years will do a decent job, and with more than 4 years will need extra hardware to accomplish the objetive. That is, to use an external sampler, etc.

If you're going to use your computer as sampler, secuencer and mixer the most important feature will be the RAM. Depending the amount of samples you use, you'll need a lot of RAM. To have 1GB or more will be a good idea, if you can afford it. And if it's fast better than if it isn't, of course ;-)

To have a good hard disk is very important too. Today you can buy cheap fast hard disks with hundreds of GB. If you are going to use samples you'll need a lot of disk space to store them.

Some of this SATA hard disk will have some clipping problems due hardware configuration. If you're going to use these hard disks to create music you can find more information about this problem HERE.

3rd: The soundcard. It's part of the computer, I know, but I've used a new bullet for it because it's the final interface between your computer and you.

You don't need to spend a lot of money in your soundcard, but you need to know that if you have a bad soundcard your processor will need to work harder than if you have a newer/more professional soundcard.

I don't like builtin soundcards, so any hardware acelerator soundcard as Creative SB Live! or newer soundcard or equivalent will be a better option. In the other hand, some of the newest models as the new Creative's X-Fi series, or other professional soundcards can give you extra features, but you will get good results with this cheap hardware anyway.

4h: A MIDI keyboard, controller or any other MIDI device. You can use it to play or edit easily the music you record. Of course, you don't need a MIDI device to create the music, you can write the score directly in the score screen, piano roll or other edit screen of your secuencer program, but for those of you who don't know a lot of music theory the easiest way will be to use one of these MIDI instruments.

The cheapest option is a MIDI keyboard controller. This is a piano keyboard which can't play any sound by itself. You need to connect it to your PC or other MIDI device capable to generate sound from samples, etc. You can find this from 100€/$. In the other hand, if you have a MIDI keyboard you can use its builtin soundbank to generate the sound. This is the best option if you have an old computer which can't handle a lot of samples by itself.

Ok, these will be the basic hardware. Of course, you can add as much hardware as you can afford, and probably if will help you to get better results. But may be not. Take in mind the most important hardware to get a good song is YOU.

You can have rack of digital effects, a 3000€ computer, a 64 tracks mixer or the latest Akai keyboard, but without a good idea you won't get a good song, dude ;-)

See you in the next chapter: Tools part 2 - Software

My way to create music: Intro

Welcome back,

During the next days I'm going to share with you my way to create music. For some of you may be this isn't interesting, but for other it'll be at least curious, and may be for somebody it'll be useful.

I'm going to split this 'how I create my music' in chapters. The idea is to get into the creation process so I won't focus a lot in technical aspects. Anyway, I can't ignore the need of use tools to convert an initial idea in something more real, so the fist part of this thing will be focused in the tools you need. You can find thousands of websites which contain information about music theory, MIDI, samples, effects or mixing if you need more information about this.

As you know, there're a lot of music styles: pop, rock, folk, dance, hip-hop, classical and hundreds more. I'll focus this document in how to create classical compositions or orchestral arrangements, but most of the ideas of this document can be applied to other styles.

In the other hand, creating classical music with a computer has limitations. Is important to know what limitations you have, otherwise you can get frustrated very soon.

The more evident is the hardest one: to get your music sounds as it were played by a real orchestra. But we'll talk about this later. Now let's go with some useful tools: the hardware!

My music as part of a documentary!!

Hi again folks!

another great surprise! Some days ago I received three emails and a post in my Soundclick's message board asking permission to use my music in a DVD documentary which will be sold in NoFear stores worldwide!

This time, the theme is not WWII, because the DVD is about motocross. The title is 'The constant war', and such title and the DVD cover shows a military taste, so I suppose the music will fit well (otherwise these guys weren't interested in use it, hehe). You can find a trailer and more info about this DVD here.

Here is part of one of these emails:

Hi Rantam
Your music is amazing. Very epic, very impressive.
I'm curious to find out about your means of composing such well-produced songs.

I've actually sent you an email and was wondering if you received it. I'm a producer/music supervisor from a film/tv production company( www.theprojects.us) that produces extreme sports documentaries. We love your music and want to use "Entering Battle" and "Forgotten Hope" in an upcoming low-budget documentary on the sport of motocross. The documentary will be sold in NoFear stores worldwide.

...

It's great to know so much people really like my work!! Let's see if they use my music finally, because they are going to release this DVD in 05' Nov and may be I've answered a bit late to their e-mail.

Ok, and finally I'd like to give you some information about the incoming 'My way to create music' thing. I don't like to call it tutorial or howto, because I'm not trying to teach you anything. It only describes my way to create music and some comments and ideas which may be can be useful to some of you.

This document is getting bigger and more complex every day, so I'm going to split it in several chapters. My idea is to release the introduction (really short) and may be the first chapter this week.

It's being a hard week, but I'll try to do it ;-)

Thanks for your attention, see ya here very soon!

Incoming!!!

Welcome back!

Today, October 28th, the new update of Forgotten Hope mod will be ready to be played! Or not :-)

Anyway, during the next weeks I'm going summarize my experience as amateur player & composer and write about it.

Stay tuned!

Greetins from musician of famous game 'Commandos'

Great news!

Eduardo de la Iglesia, musician involved in the development of the famous games saga 'Commandos', and the incoming 'Lord of the Creatures' game, has writen a nice post in my Soundclick's message board:

' Hi Rantam!!
WOW!!! But some of them suggested it wasn't enough powerful to be used as song before joining the battle.

The 'honour & sadness' taste of the melody doesn't fit very well as combat tune, so I decided to create a new one. The name was clear from the begining: 'Entering Battle'.

After tons of hours of work I shown the song to some FH dev team members, and they liked it a lot. A thousand of versions later and a couple of polls in FH private team forums, Lobo, FH team leader, wrote me: "we're going to use some of your songs in FH".

Great!! It'll be included with the 0.7 FH release, the last planned version of FH using the outdated Battlefield 1942 engine. The next one will use the new Battlefield 2 engine.

My music as part of a movie? A independent film director has asked me if he could use my music in a WWII film he is doing.

It's a low cost movie which will be shown in the Sundance film festival, probably out of the competition, but to me that's great! I know Sundance festival and It'd be fabulous to listen my music in a movie shown there.

He has sent me an email full of nice words about my work, so I'm very, very happy.
